Rob Bennett's Biography
I was born in South Africa in 1949. I studied psychology, anthropology and philosophy at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg. I held office on the National Executive of the South African Students Union (NUSAS), went into political exile in 1969, living and working in various countries including the U.K., U.S.A., India and Germany.
My interest in healing and bodywork was kindled by many years practice and study of Hatha Yoga (Desikachar) and meditation. I am a qualified Yoga teacher. In London I trained and worked with a spiritual healing circle (The Acacia House Centre under Karl Francis and Grace Saville).
At the Boyesen Institute for Biodynamic Psychology, also in London, I trained in body therapy. Concurrently I underwent intense personal therapy there, both in groups and on an individual basis. I broadened this training with David Boadella in Biosynthesis. I have experienced Jungian analysis and Gestalt therapy. Good luck enabled me to meet and have a course of sessions with Karlfried Graf von Dürckheim. In his centre “Der Johanneshof” in the Black Forest, I lead some of my first workshops in body therapy.
In California I studied Shiatsu and Foot Reflex Zone Therapy and spent some time working at Esalen Institute. I hold a diploma in Classical Massage (I.T.E.C. London). In Germany I am a qualified “Heilpraktiker”. At the University of London I completed a course in anatomy and physiology.I attended many dance and movement workshops and courses eventually concentrating on Contact Improvisation with Pete Brooks and Steve Paxton. In India I studied Tantra with Mahendranath, the Advadhoot Yogi and Vedanta with Nataraja Guru. I learned the basics of South Indian classical music in Bangalore.I am an initiate into the Sangoma tradition of South Africa. Other shamanic traditions are of great interest to me as well. As a musician, song-writer and recording engineer with my own studio, I love singing, dancing and drumming.
My major fields of interest presently lie in exploring the links between healing, therapy, shamanism (particularly trance states), spirituality and creativity. I have a passion for the exploration of human relationships and what it means to be a mature, self-respecting woman or man in the society of today. I am father to three children and now live in Berlin, Germany. Since 1978 I have been working in private practice as an individual and group therapist, couples counsellor and healer. In 1982 I began running training programs, offering supervision and leading dance and movement workshops.
